Considering the purchase of a used recreation vehicle?
Here's a little help on what to look for when checking
out the coach.
Water damage is big on the list: check the carpet, walls,
and ceiling for water stains. Do the floors or roof sag
in places? If you notice any of these problems, don't
buy. These are the signs of water damage, as are warped
outside walls and gaps where there ought to be a tight
fit.
Check the bedding and mattresses. Look for water marks
where bedding meets the walls.
If it's a basement unit, check below for rust. While
you're there, have a look at the axles.
Since RVs sit more than they drive, the tires tend to
dry rot, so check out the rubber.
Check service records for repeat visits for the same
problem.
If you're looking for a unit with a slide-out, make sure
the seals work and the slide-out fits tightly into the
body. You don't need your extra room sliding out into
traffic while you're driving.
Check the weight-rating for the unit.
If there is only 1,000 pounds between your unloaded weight
or "dry weight" and your loaded weight, move on to another
unit. This is not enough payload for people, food, water,
gas, propane and gear.
