However, "a lot of the girls verbalized they didn't care about sex," Sinclair said. The girls are usually still in high school and living at home with their families, and the boys are usually older and no longer in school, Sinclair said. Nguyen said none of the young women agreed they were trading sex, or taking part in prostitution. "Some of them felt it was empowering to have something guys want," she said. Following the presentation, Sinclair said while the difference between sexual bartering and prostitution is opinion-based, she feels there is a line between the two. "For me, prostitution and sex trade work, it's work -- that's the difference. These girls see (bartering) as part of the natural dynamic of relationships they have with guys." The information, Nguyen said, should not be used to tell young people the practice is wrong, or to tell youth how to live their lives, but to assist them in following safe sex practices. "We want them to know they are putting themselves at risk," she said.
