says ... Girls as young as 12 using sex to barter for luxuries, sex conference hears Girls as young as 12 are using sex to barter for items such as jewelry and clothing, feeling they owe it to the older boys they hang out with, a sexuality conference heard Wednesday. "Young women between 14 and 16 ... often have sexual relationships to get what they want, like luxury items," Bridget Sinclair of St. Stephen's Community House in Toronto told delegates to the recent annual conference at the University of Guelph. "They don't have a strong relationship with sex, so they don't see it as something major to give up," Sinclair said. Chi Nguyen, a volunteer at St. Stephen's, an agency housing the Youth Arcade drop-in centre, said the practice is not new. Many young girls equate it with the housewife who has sex with her husband to make him happy, Sinclair and Nguyen said. Owed sex Of 15 girls Nguyen and Sinclair polled, nine said they felt they owed sex to males, who are usually older than them. Six said they enjoyed the experience.
