    A little drug lexicon

MDMA: nicknamed the "pill of love" in the early 80s, it's the main component in ecstasy. Its effects last five to six hours.

MDA: methamphetamine issued from amphetamines originating from Latvia, it's similar to MDMA and its active duration is between eight to twelve hours. There are nearly 200 different molecules of methamphetamines.

LSD: lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD 25) was isolated in 1938 and its hallucinatory properties were discovered by accident in 1943. The stimulation and the visual deformations that it creates can last up to eight hours.

Nitrous oxide: sold as an inflatable plastic ball, it's a gas with hilarious and exciting effects that last two to three minutes.

Ketamine, or Special K: highly potent veterinarian anesthetic used for its psychedelic properties. Its effects last two to ten hours.

GHB: the drug of memory blanks

In New York City clubs, small signs advise to "never leave your glass without supervision." That's because of an alarming trend of adding GHB or ketamine, also called Special K to people's drinks. They're two powerful anaesthetics used in veterinarian medicine.

Scentless and tasteless, they are usually consumed to accentuate the effects of LSD or ecstasy, and to make it easier to come down off them. However, the effect of these two products, especially GHB, is the elimination of psychological defenses. This is how, last winter in New York City, young women dropped by at a police station with the following statement: "I can't remember what happened last night, but I'm not feeling too well." A medical exam showed that she was a victim of gang rape. GHB inhibits the nervous system, cognitive functions and memory. That's why victims usually can't remember a things from the day before. Always go out in a group and make sure everyone keeps an eye on each others' drinks during absences.
