    Mark and the witch

Mark is 26. He doesn't do the rave circuit. He goes to clubs or hangs out at private parties. He takes the same drugs that are found in raves. "Anything that can keep me awake is good. I'm vigilant and I know the rules. I've been consuming pills for quite a while." His favorite mix is ecstasy with Special K to manage the down of ecstasy.

"One night, I was alone, which is rare since I'm aware of the importance of being with someone when I get high. I was feeling fine, the music was great, and so were the people there. The visual environment is crucial when you get stoned. I always tell myself, 'you're hot, the scene is great, everything's cool, you're the happiest man on earth.' I dance in a trance-like state and that's how I get through the night.

"Whatever happened that night, I don't remember how the first bad thought came to me. Suddenly, everything was dark and I felt heavy. A girl facing me was staring at me as she danced and she was with a man who was also staring at me. Everybody was looking at me. I immediately became paranoid. 'You're about to hit a bad trip, man, stay in control!'

"My mind was going a million miles an hour. But the more I tried to calm down, the more I was slipping towards delirium. It felt like I was an intruder rejected by everyone and this sensation filled me up, choking me. It was terrifying. The girl's hair was floating in the air, she was laughing and, all of a sudden, her teeth were growing. I thought she was a witch. She wanted to eat me, she was going to kill me, she was coming closer with her scary teeth. She wasn't walking but she was floating. Then she transformed into a giant spider. I don't know why, probably to defend myself, but I threw myself on her. The girl was screaming because I had caught her at the throat. Around me, people were reacting because they thought I was attacking her. A bouncer came and grabbed me by the arm. I was now surrounded by spiders who wanted to pierce my skin with their sharp teeth. God, was I scared! The big guy kept staring at me and telling me to calm down.

"I can't remember how I ended up in the firemen's truck. In my mind, I kept hearing people around me talking: 'did you see how badly he danced? Did you see how ugly he was? What an idiot...' I would have given anything for them to leave me alone. But that was impossible, since the voices were in my head.

"I woke up one morning, not knowing where I was. Men in white coats gave me some pills with a glass of water. I was in the hospital, but I had no idea how I got there. Every day, the doctors asked me what the voices were saying. I wasn't at the party anymore, but they were still speaking to me."

The voices in Mark's head shut up two weeks later. He had left the emergency room for a comfortable bed in the psychiatric wing. Victim of a paranoia fit, he stayed there two weeks.
