    Watch your back

So you've worked out your thighs, butt, legs, abs, and chest, what's left? Fitness coordinator Art McDonald of Al Palladini's Community Centre in Vaughan says it's important to take a look behind you. Your back is often a neglected area for women because we either don't notice it much when standing in front of a mirror or really never considered it a 'problem area'.

"The back is often strained, or injured due to an imbalance in strength and/or flexibility between it, and the chest," says McDonald.

The look is a little more obvious with men. Most have seen those guys with bulky shoulders and chest muscles that curl in forward, seeming that with one push from the back they would fall over. For women, not strengthening the back leaves this area vulnerable as a weak link therefore susceptible to injury.

"The lower back is not generally weak," says McDonald. "But it tends to be overused because the other parts are hunched over leaving the lower back with much more weight to carry." The way to prevent this back strain, says McDonald is to work the major muscles in your body equally to keep an even balance.

"It's tough to work all the muscles in your body, but it's important to work the major ones."

McDonald says back pain is not something anyone would like to experience, he knows this because he has experienced it himself. Although he is in incredible shape today, McDonald says there was a time when he was feeling the pains of a weaken back.

"Having back pain is so debilitating, you don't want to go through it." He says that this experience helps him relate to many of his clients who are looking to strengthen their back and avoid any more pain.
