To
help prevent skin damage, Goldhar recommends sunscreens with an SPF
of 30 or greater. He suggests applying the sun protection to all exposed
skin about 10 to 15 minutes prior to sun exposure. There should be enough
cream on the skin to leave a slightly milky-white film, which absorbs
into the skin within ten minutes.
The survey found that 66 per cent of women and 43 per cent of men knew
to apply sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes before sun exposure.
The survey also found Quebec residents to be the most sun smart, with
67 per cent recognizing the need to apply sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes
before sun exposure.
While Manitoba and Saskatchewan residents are the least sun smart, with
only 50 per cent knowing when to apply sunscreen.
When it comes to reapplying sunscreen Albertans are the most sun smart,
with 37 per cent applying their sunscreen every two hours.
Ontarians are the least sun smart about re-applications with only 25
per cent applying sunscreen every two hours, and 31 per cent only applying
sunscreen once while outdoors.
