    A challenge for your arms

I consider my friend to be a sensitive person. He's considerate, never has intentionally hurt my feelings, or harmed me in any way. For these reasons I did not bite his head off and feed it to the wolves when he asked, while holding on to my upper arm, "Why is this flabby?"

Yes, the same look of disbelief you must have on your face right now was painted on mine. In that moment of rage, I could not believe he had said such a thing. But later on that evening, while flapping my arm trying to understand what he had felt, I decided that maybe I should consider picking up some weights. But where do I start? What do I do?

I enlisted the help of Art McDonald, fitness coordinator at Al Palladini Community Centre in the City of Vaughan.

I warned McDonald that I don't work out my arms very much, and if I do, the weight is never more than 8 pounds. He understood this, and said that it is very common to work on body parts we are most comfortable with, for women it tends to be the lower body, and ignore those we have more difficulty with.

"We tend to work our strengths," he says. "But we have to work our weak limbs too."

Before beginning any exercise, whether it is arms or another body part, McDonald stresses the importance of taking five minutes to warm up the body with some cardiovascular exercise to get your joints lubricated.

The first exercise McDonald demonstrated targeted the biceps. Many women are strong in this area, thanks to lifting objects like groceries or briefcases.

For beginners, McDonald says he's more concerned about getting the form of the movement correct and comfort with the exercise. However, once that phase is gone, he says you have to work hard.

Some females are concerned that weight lifting will make their bodies look bulky and less feminine, but McDonald says it will take more than a couple hours a week to get huge, bulky muscles.

"It's difficult for females to put on size," says McDonald. "So you have to give the muscle something it's not used to, work it hard."
