SIX SECRETS TO LAND YOUR DREAM JOB

Six secrets to land your dream job (Part II)

  • Be aware of your posture. Body language can give away more about your personality than what you say or even the clothes you wear. Make sure to sit upright. Nothing indicates laziness, indecision and a lack of professionalism like slouched shoulders and a stooped chin.

  • Sit still. Avoid any type of nervous movement of your hands or feet, and try not to cross and re-cross your legs too many times. Any bodily expression of nervousness is likely to be perceived as a lack of discipline or self-control.

  • Smile. Employers always prefer a candidate who seems cheerful and enthusiastic to somebody who comes across as grumpy, unfriendly, or stressed. But be careful to not overdo it: smiles that are laboured, and humour that is forced can be disastrous. Nothing is more unique than your sense of humour, so make sure that a joke is in good taste, and that you have a receptive audience before you decide to do your best Whoopi Goldberg impression.

  • Job search clubs. If you'd prefer not to enter the job hunt battlefield as a lone soldier, you can join a club of like-minded job hunters. In addition to giving much needed moral support, groups like these can help you prepare for the interview process by conducting mock interviews, tests, and giving constructive criticism on appearance, clarity of speech and body language. Because members often share the same doubts and disappointments, they can help each other to put their job searches into perspective and to avoid discouragement.

The most commonly asked interview questions:

  • What are your main attributes and what are your weaknesses?
  • What do you think you can bring to the company?
  • Are you ready to work late at night or on weekends? Are you prepared to move to another city?
  • Do you work well without much supervision?

If public speaking as almost any casual survey of friends will show is the most dreaded event in many people's lives, the process of finding a job is surely a close second. But courting the dream job is much easier if you're able to show a little self-confidence, a friendly smile and add a tasteful dash of humour.
