Six secrets to land your dream job

As psychologist and author Gilles Azzopardi explains, the job interview is the most important step in the employment process. A successful interview much like a good date requires both honesty and self-confidence: "There is no need to pretend to be someone else: if it's going to click, you have to allow your true self to come through."

His main advice? "Stay natural, be yourself. You can't please everyone. Transforming yourself to please others at all costs is not worth the effort; there's no reason to do it."

Here are some tips to help you avoid harmful mistakes:

  • Familiarize yourself with the job you're applying for. Not only will this enable you to discuss the job intelligently, but it will also allow you to emphasize aspects of your personality and career profile that match those of the ideal candidate.

  • Pay close attention to your appearance clothing can make or break a job. If you're a would-be actress with a dramatic flair make sure you leave the /Moulin Rouge /outfits in the closet: at work, you're expected to look serious and professional without being too flashy. While the banking and management sectors tend to lean towards a classic, conservative style, the advertising and communication fields usually offer a little more room for both semi-casual attire and playful experimentation.

As Azzopardi warns, however, make sure to remain "sober and in good taste" during the interview, and avoid taking any unnecessary risks. Put yourself (and your interviewer) at ease by just being yourself.
