Quek and Yuen suggest the following techniques
to help you overcome your procastinating and become an anticrastinator:
Use a Daytimer and make "to do" lists
to prioritize things you must do. Other technologies, like computer timers,
Palm Pilots and watches that buzz can remind you to do things.
Take a task and break it down into
small steps. If you think of the whole thing, like cleaning out the garage,
it will overwhelm you. Instead, resolve to empty two cartons each day.
Instead of waiting to take a whole
week off to get your tax return ready, take 15 minutes to do some organizing
now! "Perfectionists tend to do all or nothing, but you can always do
something in 15 minutes," says Yuen. "Even if you're tired or hungry,
something is something. Use an egg timer. Reward yourself when you're
done."
Get a buddy to support you and make
a public commitment to do something you've been putting off, like going
to the gym.
"But don't resolve to go five times a week. That's unrealistic if you
haven't been going at all," says Yuen. Try going three times a week, and
even if you only go twice, reward yourself and reinforce the desired behaviour.
